meet: the bfa

Hello all. It’s been a while since I’ve done a meet: feature, and my Blogless Friend April (BFA) has been gracious enough to sit for an interview…4 months ago. So, without any further shilly-shallying, I give you my dear BFA.
......................................

H: Hey April! What’s shaken, bacon?

BFA: Not much. I just read a treatise on how a CSA can solve world hunger, make peace with your family, and makes keys while you wait! Genius!

H: Sounds great. Let’s get past the crazy hippy portion of our interview and into the real meat and potatoes. What is your shoe size?BFA: 8.

H: I used to be a size 8.5. And then I had Birdy. Other parts of me have also grown. I also credit my love of cheese. What’s your favorite food?

BFA: I have too many, hence having to get up at 5:30 and sweat for an hour three times a week. Though, since it’s summer, it’s mostly swimming after work.

H: You are quite the swimmer…weekdays after work, weekends during P & G’s swim lessons. Enough with the softball questions: Which child is your favorite?BFA: The one I imagined before actually having children.

H: Good answer. What is your favorite way to spend an evening?

BFA: I’m a “vegger.” Hanging out and watching TV with the MD [editor’s note: everyone wants an MD in your life. If you don’t think you do, you haven’t met the MD]. I also like going to Swilly’s for a grilled chicken Caesar salad with extra croutons, or listening to the Little House on the Prairie audio book with P & G.

H: That DOES sound like a good evening. I can see why we are friends.

BFA: Because we like TV and croutons?

H: Among other things, yes. I’m writing this interview…if you get too sassy, I’ll write something like “I like to vote Republican whenever I can.”

BFA: Easy trigger.

H: Pipe down. Moving on. So, why do you like MD?

BFA: So, so, so many reasons. He’s nice, funny, smart, chatty, has strong opinions about men leaving their jackets on at weddings (which I totally agree with), he helps people move, knows how to cook, is a good father and he puts up with me being bossy and/or high maintenance every now and then. Oh, I’m bossy and high maintenance-y more than every now and then? Sometimes? Most of the time?! Hmmmm. Well. I like him even more now.

H: We all like MD. And his shrimp. Oh, sweet sassy molassy…the shrimp…um…I need a minute. Tell the people why you think manhole covers are round.

BFA: What? Do I work for the city? Who knows?

H: That wasn’t nearly the time I needed to recover from the memory of the shrimp. And manhole covers are round so they don’t fall down into the sewer. Triangle shapes work well too. Anyway. Shrimp live in your refrigerator, but not as often as they should. What else would we find in there?

BFA: You will almost always find milk, eggs, and tortillas. We keep the cheese in the freezer and the Diet Pepsi in the pantry. So come on over for quesadillas anytime you like!

H: You know it! The taco night from your youth is alive and well at your house. Speaking of youth in an offhand way, what posters were on your wall when you were 16?

BFA: Duran Duran, Def Leppard, and tons words from magazines cut out and made into collages.

H: I think that would accurately describe most 16 year-old’s bedrooms. What is it with chicks and words cut out from a magazine? I used Seventeen most for such things. My mom’s Martha Stewart and my dad’s Popular Science didn’t have enough “awesome” words like “grrl power” and “sweet.” You can’t be melodramatic with words like “futuristic space car” and “zinnias are a good thing” on your walls. The thing about being a girl and being a teenager at the same time is that you are never really happy with who you are. If you could have a super power to up your awesomeness quotient as a non-teenage girl, what would it be?

BFA: I would have a shield that made me impervious to smells and germs.

H: Htr told me about your queasy stomach when you were pregnant. Who would you say is your favorite office mate? And would you own a poster of him/her and put it in your room surrounded by cut out magazine words?

BFA: My favorite office mate is Htr. And that’s not just because she’s the only office mate I’ve ever had. And, I would totally have a poster of her, but only if she would sign it; “To April, you really are my favorite and you’ve never been a bit high strung. Love, Htr” I would pay good money for that!

H: You know me, right?BFA: I would hope so at this point.

H: So you know my love of Ikea. Thus, I pose this question: If you could name an item at Ikea, what would you choose?

BFA: Flemsvik.

H: What would it be?

BFA: Storage that holds scrapbooking materials, and magically organizes it for you. Wait, can I change my superhero powers to having the ability to organize anything in a matter of moments while making it look like I live in a Pottery Barn catalog?

H: That is a tall order, but if anyone can do it, it’s IKEA. Since we both love reading, what fictional character would you be and why?

BFA: Good question. You’ve stumped me. I’m pretty happy being me. Although if there’s someone who snacks a lot and sleeps a lot, yet is healthy, looks fit and lives in a tidy and organized home, and is more patient I’d like to be her.

H: I think that’s a character in a Nora Roberts book somewhere. Not that I would read those books or anything. I read things like War and Peace. Often. In fact, I’m reading War and Peace while I’m interviewing you.

BFA: I’ve notice that, and I think it’s rude to be reading and interviewing at the same time…though I do admire your ability to multitask.

H: Next, I plan on reading Moby Dick. P and I have formed a book club.

BFA: Easy trigger…or I’ll hunt you down like a white whale too.

H: So angry…we’ll move on to the last question. What is one seven letter word that describes you?

BFA: Your “one 7 letter word” rules can’t contain me! I guess I’ll go with… SoSassy.

H: I think that sums up this entire experience, don’t you think?

BFA: I never promised to not be sassy or make up words.

H: I’ll have to keep that in mind for next time. Thanks for joining us BFA!

meet: htr

You know those people in your life that are always good for a _____ (and I invite you to fill in the blank)? Well, my buddy Htr is good for just about everything, especially making me laugh. And helping me pass the day. And all kinds of other things.

I give you Htr, my office spouse and Lighty Soulmate:

..................................................................................
H: Yawn. Office time. Boo.

Htr: Grumble. Agreed.

...three hours of typing and silence later...

H: Htr...whatcha doin' over there?
Htr: Um...nuffing?

H: Good. You have time to answer some questions. And don't think about not answering. I have good aim, a box of paperclips, and you only 10 feet away.

Htr: Psh.

H: Let's get started. What's your name, friend?

Htr. Heather Elizabeth Mo-

H: HEY! I'm a Heather Elizabeth TOO!

Htr: What are the odds. Moving along. I'm Heather Elizabeth Morgan, nee Thompson, of the Pullman Morgan-Thompsons.

H: Aren't we fancy schmancy.

Htr: Zip it.

H: Right. So your favorite bar...what is it?

Htr: My Office, especially when the students aren't there. The cheese sticks are divINE. As are the ruebens. And the chicken strips. And the nachos. It's where we're going on Thursday to celebrate Betty Friedan's birthday. Speaking of Betty, if I was a professional female wrestler, I would call myself "The Feminine Mystique."

H: Ha! You'd have some crazy apron and hit people with rolling pins. I'd be a big fan. And I'm looking forward to getting the rueben. Yum. I couldn't help but notice that all but one of those dishes you mentioned have cheese. You a cheese fan, Htr?

Htr: I love cheese. A lot. You can put it on anything and it makes everything better.

H: Would it make Lucy better?

Htr: You can't improve that dog. Lucy is awesome. (Editor's Note: She is.)

H: I bet it would make her gassy. So, your husband's name is Ron, and what do you like about him?

Htr: He makes me laugh from my toes, and I feel at peace the second he enters a room. Like Edward makes Bella feel. Heather, is there something wrong?

H: (cough-gagging) No, no, we're good over here. Edward and Bella, right. I just inhaled one of the little cartoon hearts coming out of your eyes. I'm better now. So what do you like to do on the weekend?

Htr: I like hanging out with my boys [Ron and Jonathon], watching mindless TV and bugging the dog.

H: Pop Quiz: Why are manhole covers round?

Htr: Because they are shaped like an a**hole! Hahahahahahaha!!! Get it?! MAN hole? HA!

H: Right...uh...sure. So, uh, tater tots?

Htr: Oh those are part of the delicious, well-balanced tater tot casserole! But they're better as mexifries.

H: Aren't you allergic to potatoes?

Htr: Yes. Let's name what I'm not allergic to...air. Also water.

H: You were an English major, and we're both hit up to read an inordinate amount of papers for the GAs and desk workers. What fictional character would you be and why?

Htr: Dr. Doolitte. Talking to animals would be awesome, and I bet they are even funnier than the voices I give them.

H: You do have a good animal voice, Htr. So....who's your favorite and best looking office mate?

Htr: Uh...it's...it's, uh...A TIE! Yeah, a tie! Between you and April. (I'm not picking...you bi*ches are crazy). And, for the record, I would totally own a poster of you and April. Especially if there were unicorns or leprechauns involved.

H: That poster would be so awesome it would set the office ON FIRE! What posters did you have in your room when you were 14?

Htr: James Dean, cause he's awesome. There was a Convoy poster that was in my room when we moved in, and I didn't take it down until I moved out when I was 22. It was hilarious.

H: Truckers are funny, I'll give you that. Last question: what do you like about WSU?

Htr: I love that we're an Ag based school. Remember the Clydesdale pulling the carriage yesterday in the parking lot (Editor's Note: I do, and it was freaking awesome)? You can't see that at a chump school like UW (Editor's Note: You can't. Mainly because they're chumps.).

This concludes this installment of Meet:. Who will be next? Only The Feminine Mystique knows! And me. I know.

meet: my brudder

My brother David is awesome. But really, what else could you expect from someone who spent so much time with me in his formative years? Besides the mental and physical (no joke) scars?

Thus, I give you my brudder (he's the one on the left, eligible ladies):
..................................................................................

H: Well hey Dave, thanks for stopping by and talking to us at A Bird in the Heather. Let's get on to the meat of the issue. What's your favorite food?

D: Pizza reigns supreme over any other food ever invented. I can eat more than anyone I know, despite claims to the contrary.

H: What would you say your favorite color is?

D: It used to be green when I was a kid, but I'd say it's more along the lines of blue.

H: I believe it. Next question...what do you want to do when you grow up?

D: Something in the field of medicine, or involving medicine and athletics.

H: Right...I remember you mentioning something about liking sports a few years ago. If my memory serves me correctly, you played football for a while. What would you consider your favorite football moment?

D: I have hella. I used to play fullback in 7th grade and my first game I broke like, a 60 yard run but then got taken down from behind by a kid who weighed half my size...and then I didn't even get to score the touchdown later on in the drive! In high school. beating Auburn who was top 10 in the state in OT, and coming from behind against Marysville-Pilchuck and also winning in OT to go on to State. But my most favorite moment was just the experience of playing with good friends for 6 years and having awesome coaches in high school.

H: Wow...long winded answer. Following the sports theme, what is your favorite Seattle sports team moment?

D: Tough question. I'd have to say the early Apple Cups in the 2000s and in '06. Going to my first Supersonics game with Dad when I was in 3rd grade was awesome, as was seeing Nate Robinson dunk on the Arizona Wildcats in 2004. Then having the Dawgs being to win in basketball. On a not-really-Seattle moment, winning 3rd place in the Renton softball league during my first year playing with the MVPC team was pretty great too.

H: Hmm...interesting. On to indoor activities. What would you say your favorite video game is?

D: Rock Band 1 & 2, NCAA Football.

H: Wow. Didn't see the football game coming. We just went to a wedding last weekend...what would you say is your most embarrassing wedding introduction?

D: Well Heath, that would be when Tru (our godmother) introduced me to her single niece by saying "So, David's here alone too!" It was pretty much all over after that. You can't recover from that type of a first impression any time soon. Also, I had like 4 beers in half an hour, so I didn't really care at that point.

H: That sounds rough. Oh wait, I was there, and it was HI-larious. Eva looked pretty cute though. Is she your favorite niece?

D: She's my favorite niece until you have a boy.

H: Jerk.

D: You asked.

H: Whatev. Moving on. What's your favorite way to spend an evening, since you are so hot-to-trot on meeting the ladies?

D: Depends on my mood. Watching TV, playing video games, or going out with friends.

H: The first two will totally get you in with the ladies. Rock on. Now, why do you always wear shorts? To show off those great gams to the eligible women in the audience? (Editor's note: David wears pants less than 10 times a year. Except when work demands it.)

D: Pants are too restricting, and get me too hot (Editor's note: That's what she said! Zing!). Shorts are usually stretchy and keep me cool--just like my personality.

H. Riiiight. To end this interview on a high note, what would you say your favorite Heather/David moment is?

D: Going to Minnesota during the summer of 2000, and the past -4-5 years becoming better brother and sister!

H: I liked that roadtrip too! Remember the crazy AM radio? And Glacier National Park? And mom breaking the lock on my door? And her being convinced bears would eat us? And that crappy Potholes place in Moses Lake? And how we could put up and take down the tent trailer like pros?

D: Uh, yes. I was there too.

H: Whatev.

I hope you enjoyed this edition of Meet:. I'll be scouting the peeps I know for forthcoming installments.
